A. Overview

Hundreds of teenagers wearing alma mater coats looked tired in the middle of that day. Since the morning until midday, they attended the orientation course as an obligatory process for new students. They passed it through to realize their dream to be a teacher. These students are the next generation of educators.

Education is a valuable treasure at the present time. One of the important elements in formal education is the teaching staff. The first lesson of being literate is delivered by teachers. Moreover, teachers also have their roles in building nation’s character into an advanced civilization.

One of private schools intending to produce educators is Institute of Pedagogy and Educational Sciences (IKIP) of Teacher Education of Indonesian Republic (PGRI) Wates, Kulon Progo (IKIP PGRI Wates). In Yogyakarta, this formal school actually has its "siblings", namely PGRI University of Yogyakarta (UPY) and State University of Yogyakarta (UNY).

IKIP PGRI Wates has gone long way as an educational institution. This school was built by IKIP Veteran Administrator Foundation (now UPY) since March 15^th 1968, under the committee of Educational Institution Administrator Organization (PPLP) of IKIP PGRI Wates. Since July 26^th 1986, it already had legal entity under the protection of Educational Institution Administrator Foundation of IKIP PGRI Wates (YPLP IKIP PGRI Wates).

During its establishment in 1968, IKIP PGRI Wates only opened two faculties, namely Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education as well as Faculty of Engineering and Vocational Education. In 1983, IKIP PGRI added two faculties, namely Faculty of Social Sciences Education and Faculty of Educational Sciences. Therefore it has four faculties until nowadays.

IKIP PGRI Wates’ vision of 2020 is to produce educators competitive in global market, having global insight, maintaining faith and piety to God, professional, mastering technological sciences, having high national commitment, and having Indonesian personality. The mission of IKIP PGRI is to optimalize the human resources of education and research in order to develop technology, sciences, as well as quality contribution to the society for the sake of the prosperity of the nation, country, and society.

B. Features

IKIP PGRI Wates is a formal school which specializes in producing skilled force in educational field. It does not change into university to produce graduates of non-educational field, like its two "siblings" in Yogyakarta, namely UPY and UNY. Therefore, IKIP PGRI Wates becomes the only private formal school in Yogyakarta which specializes in producing educational gradutes of Bachelor Degree with title of Educational Bachelor Degree (S.Pd.).

C. Location

The location of IKIP PGRI Wates is on KRT. Kertodiningrat Street number 5, Margosari Subdistrict, Pengasih District, Kulon Progo Regency, Special Province of Yogyakarta, 55652.

D. Access

The location of IKIP PGRI is accessible using two-wheel or four-wheel private transportation. Visitors can also take public transportation, namely Yogyakarta-Wates bus from Giwangan Bus Station, Yogyakarta, and stop at Wates bus station. From there, visitors can take colt (mini-bus or usually called colt tuyul by local people) route Pengasih District.

E. Ticket

There is no particular charge to visit IKIP PGRI Wates.

F. Accommodations and Other Facilities

IKIP PGRI Wates has four faculties which offer some pedagogy program, namely:

· Faculty of Educational Sciences

This faculty has a program, namely Counselling and Guidance Program for Bachelor Degree. This program got Accreditation C in 1999. In 2004, this faculty successfully changed its status into Accreditation B based on Accreditation Decree Number 017/BAN-PT/AK-VII/S1/V/2004.

· Faculty of Social Sciences Education

This faculty provides three programs, namely:

· Education of Pancasila and Civics Program for Bachelor Degree. The status of this program is Registered since 1985.

· Business Education for Bachelor Degree which offers Economics Education Program with Specific Skill on Commerce Education for Bachelor Degree. The status of this program is Registered since 1986.

· History Education for Bachelor Degree. The status of this program is Accredited C since 1997.

In 2007, History Education successfully changed the status from Accreditation C into Accreditation B based on Accreditation Decree Number 026/Ban-PT/Ak-X/S1/IX/2007.

· Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education

This faculty offers a program, namely Mathematics Education for Bachelor Degree. The status of this program is Registered since 1986.

· Faculty of Technology and Vocational Education

This faculty offers a program, namely Mechanical Engineering Education for Bachelor Degree. The status of this program is Registered since 1986.

As an effort to support the teaching-learning process, IKIP PGRI Wates provides learning facilities that is a library which houses 8,580 copies of book (in 2008) with 3,780 titles. In addition, this campus was built on an area of 5,000 m² with a permanent building of 2,760 m². This building is supported by representative and supportive classrooms to produce high quality educational forces of Indonesia.
